Quality of life seems locked in. Mortgages, cars, schools, and prestige can’t easily be downgraded, even if they are unhappy most of the day most days. It’s lifestyle slavery, and it kind of sucks.

That’s an excellent analysis. I feel this is true of many people — our lifestyles are dependent upon maintaining that which we already have, and so we don’t question the status quo.
