Mark Hamill- A Star Wars Legend?

With the new Star Wars movie coming out in December, Star Wars The Last Jedi, and the anticipation rising from the fans for the new actors brought into this universe, like Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, and more, the excitement just keeps increasing. I however, would like to talk about a more recognizable actor: Mark Hamill. Mark Richard Hamill, or as most people know him, Luke Skywalker, has shown us what true acting is supposed to look like in the Star Wars universe, as well as our own universe. Hamill is a phenomenal actor, constantly praised for his wondrous works as an actor. Many fans or anti-fans would say they don’t Hamill’s acting style/portrayal of the character, as it may come across as annoying or too crazy to handle. In this article, I will be showing you a few opinions, as well as what I think of Mark Hamill’s acting career as the young ambitious hero Luke Skywalker.

In the article, “One of the most successful movies of all time (and I’m not talking about the Box Office take),” Elswet reviews the first in the original Star Wars trilogies, Episode IV. She talks about Hamill’s character Luke, and how he was perfectly portrayed in this sci-fi film: “And Mark Hamill. He was perfectly cast as the whining little boy who wanted more, but was afraid to reach for it. He grows up quite well on film in these three installments, and endears himself to the audience so much the more for it.”

I believe this is how most fans react to Hamill’s character. Star Wars needed a young, adventurous protagonist to take on the evil’s of the universe. A man of the hour to steal the hearts of young and old fans alike.

Dirk Libbey has similar comments in his article, “The Real Reason Luke Skywalker Is Such An Important Star Wars Character, According To Mark Hamill”. Libbey talks about the ordinary aspect of the character that Hamill plays, and how Hamill was the perfect actor to portray Luke Skywalker. If there was any other actor, we might have gotten a completely different feel.

While much of that is designed in the writing of the character, it also requires the right actor to pull it off. If Mark Hamill had been a different sort of actor, if he had actually been a 6' 2" perfectly fit specimen, no script in the world would have made him feel like the same character that we actually go.

Libbey continues to expand on Hamill’s important portrayal as the character to both an older and younger audience. A young nine-year old would love to have had a friend like Luke Skywalker, for Luke (Hamill) isn’t your typical hard-to-approach kind of guy. Hamill’s soft appearance and good-natured acting is what brought in several fans to love him. (Libbey)

One article written by Ross McDonagh, called “Mark Hamill Never Watches Star Wars” has an interview where Mark Hamill states opinions on his own acting as Skywalker. Hamill believes he did a terrible job, and he refuses to watch through any of the original trilogies! When McDonagh asked Hamill if he watches the films in order from when they were made, or how the story unfolds chronically, Hamill just replied with, “‘It just wouldn’t occur to me. I mean there’s nothing I can do to change it, you know?” (Mark Hamill)

While I was watching the movies as a child, I was always drawn to Mark Hamill’s character, as well as his acting style. Yes, many would say he is very whiny, or acts childish. But That’s what I love about him! He portrays a teenager who is just trying to figure out who he is in the world, and ends up having to save the universe. I believe Mark Hamill perfectly acts this out. As was said earlier, a different actor might have pulled off a very different protagonist, and would have left us with a let notable character. What I love about him is the amount of a “normal” appearance Hamill has while playing this character. He doesn’t over-do anything, and perfectly portrays the emotions of a young hero that the universe needed. Yes, he may be a bit childish, and immature, but that’s what makes the character development throughout the films absolutely breathtaking. Audiences get to see a small teenager scared of how to handle big grown-up problems, go out and conquer his fears and save the people he loves. He shows us that it it is possible to have a happy ending, even if the future looks hopeless. Hamill successfully portrayed that beautifully. Many fans, including myself, are waiting on the edge of their seats to see how the wondrous actor will portray Luke Skywalker’s charms once again in Star Wars The Last Jedi.
