The 212 on Greg Gianforte

The decades of vitriol against the news media has reached its logical conclusion.

Last night, while covering Montana’s congressional race, Ben Jacobs, a political reporter for The Guardian, was attacked by the Republican candidate, Greg Gianforte, after asking a question about the Congressional Budget Office’s study on the number of people who would lose their insurance under President Trump’s health care plan.

Gianforte, according to an account by three FOX News reporters, grabbed Jacobs by the neck, threw him down and then started punching him.

The attack prompted condemnation across the political spectrum. David Jolly, a former Republican congressman from Florida said, “I had five election nights in three years as a Republican in an Obama district. Proud tonight to say I never assaulted anyone.”

But Greg Gianforte has defenders.

Brent Bozell called Ben Jacobs “an obnoxious, dishonest first class jerk. I’m not surprised he got smacked.”

Bozell’s defense of Gianforte’s street thug act is absolutely unsurprising.

Brent Bozell, his Media Research Center, and other conservatives have spent decades calling impartial reporters liberal hacks. It’s easy to see the line from “Don’t Believe the Liberal Media!” to “Enemy of the American People!”

It is so sad that the state that gave us the great Chet Huntley can also give us Greg Gianforte.
