Maybe it’s because we’ve just had a natural disaster here but thankfully I have seen the opposite in play. People are coming together to help out their neighbors and so are the businesses. I am wondering if the fact that the median age here in Florida tends to be older plays into this. Also I do not live in a wealthy city, so that could be part of it too. People are more likely to be sympathetic if they have been there themselves.
Are we more likely to be empathetic when the cause is an “act of God” versus personal choices though? Probably.
