Really insightful article! The 24/7 news cycle has caused this. There are too many media outlets and to compete for audience they have to emotionally charge everything they report to get the biggest response and to keep the audience coming back for more. The way news is now reported, analyzed, and dissected, it is easy to get the impression that every incident we hear about is happening everywhere, could have happened to us, and requires our immediate attention and constant vigilance. This has lead to a complete overestimation of the likelihood of a particular crime. What's worse is that there seems to be an underlying expectation that we should now somehow be able to prevent bad things from happening in the world and that crime and destructive behavior can be prevented. Where did we get the idea that human perfection is possible or even likely? It blows my mind.
