Contradiction Much: What kind of Feminist are you?

Examining the Feminist Muslim….. and proving they do not exist

While examining and debating those who share the opposite of my opinion, it has come to my attention that a lot people are contradicting themselves. Some of them claim to even be what one might consider a walking contradiction. So for every contradiction I come across, I will write and opinion piece such as this one.

For this piece, I have decided to examine the concept of a Muslim Feminist. Let us start by looking at the word we are more familiar with and may know more about in depth. Feminism, ‘The advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. ‘ , as defined by the dictionary. A Feminist is defined as ‘a person who supports feminism.’ So this is plainly put and easy to understand. Now let us look at the world Muslim. A follower of the religion of Islam. Right there. A follower of Islam. Meaning we are going to have to take a good look into Islam to fully understand why a Muslim Feminist is a walking contradiction and cannot exist. Shall we begin?

A google image I had found. The Author was not credited but I was able to find her piece and read it’s entirety as well as provided the link on the picture. I encourage Readers to check it out as it was a very good piece

Islam began centuries ago in Arabia and was brought to the world through the voice of The Prophet Muhammad. Muslims, Followers of Islam, believe that there is only one God, Allah. Muslims believe that prophets of God were sent down to mankind to teach them how to live by his law. These were men such as Abraham, Jesus and Moses. They Believe Muhammad was the final Prophet. While some Muslim core practices may be favoring no particular gender, There are many that heavily degrade or diminish women. Such as the commonly known, but misunderstood Sharia law.

Sharia law is the Law of Islam. Its is the last brought upon by the actions and words of the Prophet Muhammad, called Sunnah, and from the Quran. While the law cannot be altered, it is said that it is open for interpretation in some ways. But even so, Sharia Law is the only legal code that dictates not only public behavior but also private behavior and beliefs. Above is a portion of what Sharia Law dictates. The red underlined are all those not in favor of women or women’s right’s. In all of these, The women comes out with almost nothing. She even looses her children. She cannot voice her opinion or speak out in her own favor. Her words are viewed as half of a man’s in court. She does not have a say in whom she is to marry, nor can she leave said marriage without some serious consequence. I don’t know about you but a woman who says she follows this, wouldn’t seem much like a feminist to me. And if she is a Feminist and an active one, she is still violating Sharia Law as mentioned in the second bullet point of the picture. Criticizing or denying any part of the Quran is punishable by death.

Now we have already said this is open to interpretation, I have found several quotes from the Quran to support the Interpretation I, and others, have come to.

  • Quran (4:3) “Marry a woman of your choice, or two or three or four”
  • Sahih Bukari (6:301) “[Muhammad said] ‘Isn’t it not the evidence of two women equal to that of a man?’ They replied yes. He said ‘ This is the deficiency in her intelligence’”
  • Quran (4:24) and Quran (33:50)— A man is permitted to take women as sex slaves outside of marriage.
  • A woman presents herself in marriage to Muhammad, but he does not find her pleasing to the eye and so he “donates” her on the spot to another man
  • Ishaq 593 — “As for Ali, he said, ‘Women are plentiful, and you can easily change one for another.’”
  • Al-Tirmidhi 3272 — “When Allah’s Messenger was asked which woman was best he replied, ‘The one who pleases (her husband) when he looks at her, obeys him when he gives a command, and does not go against his wishes regarding her person or property by doing anything of which he disapproves’.”

Even with certain things “open to interpretation”, Evidence does not show favor for women. One point had even said Women are to looked upon as domestic animals. Dependent, no free will. This does not seem like a Religion that would accept the feminist thoughts or beliefs into their inner circle. And they don’t.

Many women have converted from Islam because of how the religion and it’s followers treat women. Many of these women have spoken out. While many women in western society have been converting to Islam, they fail to realize how things would be living in an actual full blown Islamic environment. Where things such as honor killings and rape may happen on a daily basis. Men constantly beat their wives to the point of bleeding and bruising. And no one stops it. The community accepts it.

So you see there are many contradictions to claiming that you are a Muslim Feminist. Islam does not want equality for women. No matter how people may spin it, it is a religion that degrades and diminishes a woman’s self worth. People may argue against this. Not all Muslims do this or follow this but clearly it says that if you don’t, the punishment is death. So if you do not accept the consequence of not following a religious law, is that truly your religion? Even if you follow and believe in the spiritual aspect, a religion is nothing if you do not live by what you believe. If you choose not to believe everything in its teachings, You are not following the true religion. A religion that has been around for centuries. This is not something you can cherry pick.

You can not be a Feminist while practicing the Islamic religion. Therefore Feminist Muslims do not exist.
