I was raised by a Trekkie

So I have some thoughts about the new Star Trek -_-

Particularly one thought. About the main character. What is this thought?

NO. This thought is no.

It has been reported that the series lead Michael Burnham (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) is the half-sister of Mr. Spock from Star Trek: The Original series.

She is the completely human half sibling of Spock, both of them sharing a mother in Amanda Grayson. Spock’s father, Sarek, who became a surrogate father to Burnham after her birth-father died.

“I was raised on Vulcan by him and my mother, Amanda” The actress explained during the comic-con Star Trek panel.

Now I am fully aware that Burnham would not be the first “Spock sibling” to simply appear ( Spock’s half-brother Sybok). I still however have a big problem with this. Mainly because it takes places ten years before Star Trek: The Original series.

If you do not understand my problem yet, sit back and let’ take a look at Spock’s story.

Spock was born on January 6th, 2230 on the planet Vulcan. His mother was Amanda Gray and his father, Sarek.

While being raised on Vulcan, Spock’s parentage caused many problems. Aside from his father being ambivalent to human nature, Spock was teased and bullied by the other Vulcan children who seemed to be trying to trigger an emotional response from his human side.

Now jump ahead to Spock in school, studying at Vulcan Science Academy, a family tradition. Spock eventually express a desire to join Starfleet Academy, something that is greatly against his father’s wishes. In 2250, Spock was commissioned as a Starfleet officer. His final decision to join Starfleet was the final rift that caused Spock and his father not to speak for 18 years.

Now seeing this here, knowing this, you expect me that the Vulcans would accept someone who is not Vulcan, not even half, into there culture? The same Vulcans whose children probably teased and bullied the HALF HUMAN Spock? Not only that, but how would you explain Sarek’s reaction to her joining Starfleet? Did he not become angry with her like he had Spock? Because she was human?

Part of me is super curious as to how this is going to be played out, and as a Star Trek family, I am sure I will stay updated with new info. But right now, I just don’t see it. It doesn’t make sense. Actually, a lot of it doesn’t make sense if connected right.

I really hope this isn’t going to be some PC Bullshit.

But don’t ask me ask a Trekkie.
