Startup Smarty Pants: PR Hacks Every Startup Should Know

Jumping into the startup world is not for the faint of heart. Entrepreneurs attempt to harness the perfect storm of creative vision, focused ambition and a unique fearlessness to walk trails sometimes even angels fear to tread. A pragmatism which defines the lives of most 9 to 5ers is commonly eschewed as a part of the process of development and promotion of any concept with potential. That same suspension of prudence often leads to blind spots in promotion of a new enterprise which leave potentially great companies vulnerable to self-immolation.

In my role as a Development and Public Relations Strategist, the single most consistent issue I confront in building (or more challenging — attempting to rebuild) a young organization’s image is that its leadership gets so wrapped up in building the enterprise that its agenda and their narrative inevitably morph into an uncomfortable ‘oneness’. It isn’t easy to extricate one from the other — Founders have a natural and deep passion for what they’re building or they wouldn’t be building it — but some degree of separation of the two is a fundamental step to continued growth and support, especially as momentum begins to build.

The first clear signs of interest in your business are wildly encouraging. Doors open, people begin to listen, actively ask questions and suddenly the dream you’ve fostered — sometimes for many years — begins to gain traction, credibility, a very real sense of possibility. Such interest reasonably serves to authenticate our objectives as entrepreneurs, reinjecting a fresh sense of pride into what can easily become a battered sense of direction over time…
