World Toilet Day (WTD) is a campaign to motivate and mobilize millions around the world on issues of sanitation. It was established by World Toilet Organization in 2001 by Jack Sim. It was established, to draw the attention of global sanitation issues is marked each year on November 19.

Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi said that “Sanitation is more important than independence". Lack of access to sanitation, impacts on health, dignity, and safety.

Now here comes the question “ WHY WE SHOULD HAVE TOILETS ?”

I’m not cracking any joke about it. Your toilet is more important than you think. Lets take a look at some facts about the sanitation crisis.
#1000 children died per dat from diarrheal diseases due to poor sanitation in the year 2013 survey.
#Clean and safe toilets help to keep more girls in school and increase attendance rates. In a report, far too many girls miss out on education just because of the lack of a cleaned and safe toilet.
#Every $1 spent on water and sanitation generates returns of $8 in saved time, increased productivity and reduced health costs.

It is estimated that 58% of all cases of diarrhea are caused from unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene which includes poor hand washing behaviors which I discussed above. “Sanitation is a human right, just like the human right to water". Women in developing countries are increasingly expressing feelings of fear of assault or rape when having to leave the house to use the toilet. Reports of attacks or harassment near or in toilet facilities, as well as near or in areas where women defecate openly, are not uncommon.

Each year, WTD provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of sanitation, and stimulate momentum towards reaching everyone, everywhere with equitable and improved sanitation.
