Designers shouldn’t code. They should study business.

After working in Graphic Design, Advertising and Digital for many years, and now running a Brand and Design business, I couldn’t agree more Joshua. I know (from experience) that designers will be excessive with the time used and craftsmanship employed on every piece of work — and that’s their role — produce the best work. Learning how, when and why you should stop ‘designing’ because you’re not adding value for the clients business is difficult, but essential.

Once you’ve sat with business owners and CEO’s, and you realise that they have many plates to keep spinning, and that design is important, but it is a part of their business, then you realise that the extra hour spent on tweaking the layout is not what they need.

Design thinking (of all kinds) and business thinking must be more closely aligned.
