“Thank you, come again”

The time has finally come, society has finally caught up to the cast of The Simpsons. Rumours circling social media states that Apu Nahaspeemapetilon is being written off the show. The controversial character who is the owner of the Kwik-E-Mart has a limited amount of time in the spotlight. Many believe that Apu is a flat character who reinforces negative stereotypes. After multiple complaints, the producer of The Simpsons’ considered multiple solutions; yet none of them would work for the show. The Simpsons’ producer has announced that it would be much simpler to do away with Apu instead.

However, being a South Asian myself I never saw a problem with Apu or the character he was, if anything it was a good laugh. I wasn’t sure if I was the only one with the perspective that the character meant no harm but to just humour its audience, so I asked around.

Just as I predicted people could see where the stereotypes were coming from but nothing was taken personally. With shows like Family Guy having flat-out racist jokes or The Office with a risky sense of humour society has seen the delicate side to creating characters and their personalities. Many people had stated there’s a difference to insult a culture and believe the terrible stereotypes true than to have a slight laugh over a character you believe doesn’t mean any harm.

Although, what’s done is done. Apus dismissal from The Simpsons has been confirmed and he will be making his exit soon. So for one last time take your chance to visit the Kwik-E-Mart before it officially closes.
