Relax, I’ll Stay Natural

Relax, I’ll stay Natural

Relaxed and natural. Two things that often juxtaposed.

Curly Hair versus straight Hair, Thick Hair, weaves and afros.

The topic of hair is one that goes unsaid, full of tension about what grows out of our head.

Because I am black, my hair is considered “bad”? But all my life, it’s the only hair I’ve always had.

I was taught by the media that “White hair was the Right hair” or even “Straighter hair is the Greater Hair”

But I say, Relaxxxx. I’ll stay natural.

I’ll stay true to my roots that are true to my roots. No substitutes.

I’m not gonna straighten it just to appease you.

I’m not gonna relax or perm it just to please you.

My hair is a reflection of my brothers and my sisters of the Black Panther Party

Who fought for their right to be black and their right to political equality.

My hair is a reflection of blackness that I have been passed down from many generations.

A reflection of our history of stolen language and segregated educations.

So many things have been recorded in history. So many things have been stolen from me.

Stripped from their motherland and forced to build a country. Slavery took everything, I hate to say it so bluntly.

Because many years later and people still aren’t comfortable with the fact. I cannot help it that I am here, I cannot help that I am here. I cannot help it that I am black.

Enough wars have been fought and enough blood has been shed. So many words have gone unspoken and speeches that have been said.

So many things have been taking away from my ancestors but this is what they gave me. A strong back, dark skin and hair this are the things that make me.

So don’t tell me that I have to relax my hair because it unprofessional I’ll just sit back and tell you “Relax, I’ll stay natural”

I’ll stay true to my roots that are true to my roots. No substitutes.

I’mma stay true to my roots that are true to my roots. No substitutes.
