Enable NTFS read / write in MacOS Sierra for FREE

[open Terminal.app and run the following commands]

/usr/bin/ruby -e “$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"
brew update
brew install caskroom/cask/brew-cask
brew install Caskroom/cask/osxfuse
brew install ntfs-3g

[Reboot by holding CMD+R to get in recovery mode]

choose Utilities>Terminal in the menu bar
csrutil disable

[reboot normally]

sudo mv /sbin/mount_ntfs /sbin/mount_ntfs.orig
sudo ln -s /usr/local/Cellar/ntfs-3g/*/sbin/mount_ntfs /sbin/mount_ntfs

[reboot by holding CMD+R to get in recovery mode]

csrutil enable

[reboot normally]

You might need to unplug/replug in your external hard drive and it should detect and show up under Devices.
