Custom types can be created and documented inline with JSDoc, which all the popular type inference and autocomplete plugins support. Additionally, TypeScript also understands JSDoc comments, so if you have them, you can leave out TypeScript annotations and work in standard JavaScript.

I admit I like TS interface annotations syntax better than JSDoc blocks, but JSDoc blocks have another major advantage over TypeScript: better automated documentation.
