JSDoc’s shortcomings are the primary reason I started the rtype project.

As for your comment about “real projects” — many of the studies that show how effective TDD can be studied real projects — including the famous Microsoft/IBM/Springer study that showed up to 90% reduction in bug density, and the GitHub data that shows that static types don’t make a big difference in bug density uses lots of real projects.
