This is not just about Krishna. It is the practice amongst Vaishnavas & Brahmins in general (though the Brahmins of Bengal & some coastal regions have different practices). But they also do not cook or offer onion & garlic. This is not meat. This is to do with the gunas. Hence, different rules govern what can be offered to different Gods. In one of the most sacred temples to Nrisimha (incarnation of Vishnu) animal sacrifice is permitted while in other temples to him, you can’t even breathe onion & garlic & the austerities are severe. Another reason why I gave up on justifying my choices based on religious grounds. Not suggesting you should but merely sharing my experience…
