Alabama Should Fire Their Web Designer
The government of Alabama has been putting out the word that starting this week for the first time ever, it’s citizens can register to vote in the upcoming elections by going online to the brand new http://alabamavotes.gov ! This is new and exciting because AL is usually at least 10 years behind the rest of the world on everything.
What I found did not disappoint:

No, this is not a website from 2003 it’s the official BRAND NEW 2016 Alabama voter registration website!
I’m not totally convinced yet that it’s not a joke. It’s funny in a pathetic kind of way, seriously not even a mobile layout? Most people are going to visit this website when they are in a waiting room somewhere. Way to think ahead people! At least they didn’t use Flash.
This leads me to questions: I wonder how many people looked at this and signed off on it before it went live. I bet it was quite a few. Not one of them has used a modern website? It’s baffling to me because there’s so many different tools and apps out there these days, even free ones (I can’t be the only one who sees or hears an ad for Squarespace 10 times a day), that a toddler could make a better website in 10 minutes.
I also really want to meet the designer. As a graphic and web designer in-training myself. Because I want to ask how they got hired, what other sites have they designed. Am I wasting my time and money in school if this is all it takes to design a site that millions of people will probably see and use?

This low-resolution clip art is a nice touch.
Anyway, my point is that whoever designed this and the people who approved it should be removed from their jobs and put somewhere where bad taste, lack of vision and poor judgement don’t directly affect the task at hand.
Actually, on second thought, they are working for the government of the state of Alabama so they might be a perfect fit.
