This article is way off base IMO. The hyper-criminalization of drug abuse in the 80s and 90s was both hypocritical, as it created two types of offenders based principally on race. It was wrong then and remains wrong today.

However, there is no reasonable equivocation of nonviolent drug users and rapists. One is a victimless “crime”. The other absolutely devastates the victim, in many cases, for life!

That it is even possible for a legitimately guilty rapist to get 3 months when drug users are getting 5 and 10 year mandatory minimums is a real world reflection of how dysfunctional and broken the criminal justice system is.
