Denise — I just wanted to thank you for your response, and for sharing. It meant a lot when I first read it, and I’ve been thinking about it since. I was reading something this morning, and was reminded of what you wrote here.
I think you’re right on the money when it comes to people projecting their fears and personal failings. It’s an ego thing right? They’re just trying to make themselves feel better by demeaning others. Unfortunately, it’s real easy to see and criticize superficial differences. The darker side of human nature, I suppose.
To walk out into the world, to be confident enough to accept differences…and to appreciate that we’re all great in our own way, isn’t always easy. At a certain point, you’d have to accept that you’re somehow less talented, less successful, less beautiful, less something. And it also requires you to care very little about what others think, to judge your life according to your own standards.
I wish we could all be in that position. And, for those that just aren’t there yet, I wish them the best. Because I truly believe that the closer we are to appreciating ourselves and our own circumstances, the more accepting we’ll be of others, and the better off we’ll be as a society.
