Don’t speculate, spectate

At Octopus Labs, testing our prototypes is an integral part of our discovery and delivery process. To make sure we’ve designed our assumptions correctly, we validate our ideas from sketches to high fidelity wireframes.

So consider the following: you’re contributing to a project that will transform the way your business engages with your customers. You’re incredibly passionate about providing value to your customers and the people using your product. However, there’s some uncertainty during your design process — the possibility of whether you’re getting the most value and insightful feedback from your user testing sessions, with the prototype you created.

1. Will the ability of the prototype provide enough useful, qualitative data to inform your decisions? …

A part of that process is creating interactive prototypes of some user scenarios that are the result of the design user research. I was a long time user of prototyping in Framer Classic to create interactive prototypes, but in the middle of 2018, Framer X was released.

Framer X, powered by React, brought a new challenge to my skill set — if I wanted to continue using Framer, I’d have to learn React. …

The sum of all parts

I divide my process into the following structure. Makes it easier to communicate my rationale.

  1. Problem
  2. Solution
  3. Approach
  4. Learnings

1. Problem

We’re all visual thinkers. Most of the time we have to see something for us to understand it. By creating visuals (in my case some rough sketches) I can turn the idea of a concept into a North Star (your guiding light) sometimes in the form of “problem statement” that can keep me stable, on the path for product delivery. …
