Back in the Saddle Again

I trekked a great many miles on my Aragon 27" twelve speed road bike. Being only 12 years old, however, it made it difficult to touch the ground without laying the bike on its side.

During the fall of 2009, I complained to my wife that while I was providing for everyone else, I missed my old hobbies, I missed riding a bike, and I wanted to be selfish for a while.

Among other things, my wife gave me a new Trek hybrid bicycle for Christmas that year. It was beautiful, but it felt awkward to ride. As I rode it around the neighborhood, the experience wasn’t what I had remembered. I quickly lost interest.

Fast forward to 2016, and I have the same bike that I’ve only ridden one time. I convince myself it’s time to do so.

The tires are flat.

I have a pump.

I try to inflate the tires and fall miserably.

Google, “How to air up a bike tire.”

“What the fuck is a presta valve?”

YouTube, “How to inflate a presta valve.”

*Attempt to inflate tire*

*Fails miserably*

“I’M NOT A FUCKING IDIOT! I’M PRETTY DAMN CLEVER!”

*tries again*

*stomps on pump until disfigured*

*throws pump*

“Screw it! I’ll ride tomorrow. Damn it!”

*buys new pump and if works great*

*prepares for ride*

“GOD DAMN IT! THE FUCKING HELMET IS TO SMALL FOR MY FAT ACORN HEAD!”

*throws helmet*

*buys new helmet*

Finally, this morning, I hit the road and our local greenway. I did a 9 mile ride in about 45 minutes. It was really a lot of fun. This is the first real ride I’ve ever had in this bike that has been collecting dust for 7 years.

I cannot wait to burn 500–700 calories again tomorrow.
