So You Want to be a Planner
I have a couple of open positions and I just can’t find the right person. I have met a bunch of people, but nobody exciting enough to hire. But also; why would I hire someone who wants to work in advertising?
If I was 27, or even in my early thirties, advertising would be the last place where I would look for a job. Interesting people don’t work in advertising anymore. Innovators, weirdo’s, troublemakers, disruptors, pretty much every type of person that made advertising sexy and interesting has left the building. Or grown old, boring and complacent. Like me.
Advertising has become the establishment. Old money. The bourgeoisie. It has become the corporation. Skynet. Mechanic and cold. It has lost the ability to dream. To be naive and think that you can make great work, solve business problems and save the world; all at the same time. Advertising has always been about making money, but today it’s only about the money.
I have no ideas where dreamers go these days. Still Google? Or do they work for VR companies? Do they abandon capitalism all together and become scientists, public servants, poets? Or worse; are we witnessing the end of dreamers in corporations because these days dreamers just start their own business? Are all disruptive weirdo’s on Kickstarter?
I refuse to hire someone who wants to work in advertising. In today’s reality we need to hire people that hate advertising. People who rejects our traditional culture and conservative mindset. Who loath our lack of innovation, our absence of courage and passion. Who are turned off by our superficial and meaningless work. People who will never fall for our BS.
Unfortunately those people don’t walk into my building.
