I haven’t regretted a moment since I switched to using cash over my cards. I haven’t ditched them entirely (pretty much a necessity for train passes and my big bills are all direct debit), but I also pull out $100 per week to cover my groceries and any other expenses during the week .
Like you there are some weeks where I have spent the lot and faced a rummage through the cupboard to find dinner (ok, last night!), other weeks I’ve underspent anything from $2 to $20. I put that into a “treat myself” tin and use it on something frivolous later. Don’t forget the treat bit — no reason why debt reducing should be all penance!
