Starting a job remotely

--

Graduating can be scary. For the last 3 years all you have known has been studying. Now suddenly you must start looking for a job. What do I want to do? Where do I want to be based? All these questions are flying through your mind as you open the job searching website.

Since the pandemic however, this has all changed a lot. You are now forced to complete your interviews and assessment centres online. You no longer have to commute to an office for work, all of this can be done from the comfort of your bedroom. But is this a good thing?

For many people, starting a job remotely can add to the stress as it can be quite nerving not being able to get that face-to-face interaction. The words imposter syndrome spring to mind which if you do not know is the feeling of inadequacy and the constant reminder that you are not doing good enough. This is totally relatable as when you are fresh out of your studies you are not sure what you should be doing, and it can be concerning feeling like you want to impress but not always totally sure how.

On the flip side, working remotely has heaps of benefits. Firstly, the world of possibilities has suddenly increased. You no longer need to be based in the same city as where you work; so, if you are in a small village in the middle of nowhere you can still get that dream job in the big city you always wanted without having to worry about the commute. Not having to commute also means that you have more time on your hands in the mornings and evenings to work on yourself and things that better you as a person.

Working remotely has also meant that you can work exactly how you want to and can in fact make you a lot more productive as you are faced with less distractions than you would have in the office. The flexibility that is provided with working remotely has really changed the workforce structure. If you have already secured that first job since graduating, congrats, you are doing better than you think. And if you are still looking, widen your search, you never know when we will be entirely expected to return to the office so take the plunge and apply for a job that you may have first thought is out of your reach!
