The essay is prefaced with talk about Charlottesville, but the bulk of it seems to be around transgender acceptance. On that point, I think transgender people are a minority, and hate speech against trans people often goes unchallenged because of a combination of tacit approval, and the danger of speaking out. (I’m not talking about in a classroom debate, but when someone is being street harassed, or a bunch of people laugh at a tranny joke and you’d be the odd one out if you speak up). Conformity is a real thing.
