Let’s Taco ‘Bout Ice Cream

BlogTO, giver of food goals, restaurant recommendations and ideas, has put out a list of the 41 best ice cream treats of the summer. I’m going to try to eat them all.

No, there’s no good reason really. In fact, a dear friend recently suggested that the metabolism envy stirred up by my constant eating adventures might be an impediment to the happiness of others. But such is the way with social media. We only ever put our best self out there, and to be honest, my best self is mostly prepared, plated and proffered by other people in exchange for my hard-earned cash. No hard feelings; I certainly couldn’t run a bakery or a restaurant (at least not yet, though I am sorely tempted). Basically, I just want to eat a lot of dessert.

A few things on the list I’ve already eaten. A few places I have eaten at, but will return for the item lauded by the city’s food lovers (and will return again when some become old favourites). You can follow along here for all the (vicarious) fun!

Behold, the Ice Cream Taco

Repeat?: Nah. I prefer the savoury kind.

Briefly, the ice cream taco is overrated. It melted all over my hands, it was hard to photograph (how then to inspire jealousy?) and it broke. A bunch. I trekked out to Booyah to try this treat and brought my friend Faryal with me. The majority of the fun was picking out ice cream flavours. Chronically indecisive, we took ages, and we split the decision. Faryal came out a winner, deciding on both the birthday cake flavour, and being able to do so in a shorter time than I could decide whether I wanted mocha ice cream or not at all.

The fun of this treat is that it’s different, but even if that’s the case, it doesn’t feel like it was the craziest idea they could have come up with in the height of the Toronto ice cream craze. The waffle shell, while delicious, is more unwieldy than an actual cone though made of the same material. It did its job, but only briefly, making the exercise of keeping white jeans clean mutually exclusive with enjoying dessert. Then again, that might always be a thing.

Booyah Inc. actually makes delicious ice cream, and it’s sad to me now that I didn’t try other treats. So thrilled by the prospect of something new, I denied myself the chance to eat the more sci-fi experiment treat on their menu — a brioche bun in which ice cream (supposedly) is sealed and stays cold while the bun stays hot. That I’ll have to eat to believe.

If you’re uptown (a little) already, there’s no reason not to eat this three-scoop thrill. Just know that there are better treats out there when you make your choice. For now, I’ll put Booyah on the backburner. I’m sticking to tacos of the savoury kind, and I don’t regret it at all.
