We are all storytellers

Exercise 1: Expressing memories

Part A: Think of a memory that your remember vividly. It should be a memory that comes easily to you.

When my brother was born.

Part B: Why do you think you remember this so well? Try connecting one or more emotions to this memory.

Because I was waiting for that moment too much and it was like a dream for me. The emotion that connects is joy.

Part C: Now try and express your memory and emotion in some way. The goal is to get it out of your head. Here are some ideas for what you could do.

Exercise 2: Your three favorite films

Part A: Identify the three films that you would take to a deserted island….

  • Little Mermaid
  • Lilo & Stitch
  • Beauty and the Beast

Part B: Why do you think you connected with these stories? Come up with at least one reason for each.

  • Little Mermaid: Is my favorite princess and I like it because it’s a different kind of princess
  • Lilo & Stitch: I found this movie very original and it makes me laugh
  • Beauty and the Beast: Is a classic and I love the soundtrack

Part C: What, if anything, do these three films have in common? How are they different?

They have in common that the 3 are from Disney, and I love Disney and they are different because each one has it’s own way to make the movie original and they have completely different habitats.

Exercise 3: What if…

Part A: Return to your 3 favorite films and try reframing each of them in terms of a “what if” statement. Share these with someone (written or verbally) and see if they can guess what movie it is from!

— What if mermaids could exist and sea animals can talk?

— What if they were friendly aliens in our planet?

— What if a human turn into a beast because of a spell and it’s timer is a rose?

Part B: Now it’s your turn. Come up with 3–5 of your own “what if” ideas.

  • What if everything we think of came true?
  • What if we are actually controlled like a barbie?
  • What if food could talk?
  • What if we could fly?

Exercise 4: Characters & Worlds

Part A: Return to your 3 films. Identify the worlds and characters in each. Write these down.

  • Who are the main characters?

Ariel, Lilo y Stitch and Belle

  • Is there a character you identify with most?

Belle

  • Where does the movie take place? Is it one world or multiple worlds?

— Little Mermaid is in the ocean and a castle near by.

— Lilo & Stitch in an island (Hawaii I think).

— Beauty and the beast in a small village and in a castle in the forest.

Part B: Try mixing a character and world from different movies. Try this a few times and see what happens.

What if Ariel fall in love with the beast?

What if Belle was a mermaid?

What if Stitch was the beast?

Part C: Return to your three “what if” statements from the previous exercises. Pick your favorite one. Can you imagine a possible character and world?

  • What if Ariel fall in love with the beast?
  • Yes, the world will be a castle that has a magic pond where Ariel lives and the character is Ariel and the Beast.

Part D: (optional) Draw or write about what life would be like in this world.

It will be a castle that it’s very far of the village and that it will always be snowing because of a spell and then in the entrance there will be a big pond with a rainfall and with the most blue water in the world, with some sparkles, where Ariel would live.
