Some Tips to Make Your Life More Interesting
And be more productive in a meaningful way
Stop reading the news. For real.
It wasn’t obvious to me for most of my life, but you can actually read the news just once per month and get everything you need to know. This frees up tons of time for you to do other things. It’s very difficult to make this a habit due to impulsiveness, but I’ve found it’s definitely worth it. On this vein, stay away from anything like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and such. The only exception is personal messages.
Think realistically about the story of your life, and if you’re happy with this.
A major concern of yours should be your life’s story. It’s up to you to make it interesting. If you don’t aim for an interesting story, then you’ll eventually feel everything you do is pointless. You should aim to make it interesting as fast as possible, or you will lose excitement. Progress it on a daily basis, not monthly or yearly. Try to do things that will be memorable from a future perspective. Make a long term vision. There’s a reason why Elon Musk focuses on outer space rather than making the next iPhone app.
Divide all activities into 3 categories: Memorable, unmemorable, and meta-activities.
Try to focus on doing memorable ones, especially ones that aid the overarching story of your life. If it’s not something you’d tell your grandchildren some day, chances are what you’re doing is a waste of time. Meta-activities are things like eating, listening to music, scratching your back, drinking, etc. They are typically ok because you can do them concurrently with other activities. Anything that doesn’t draw your attention is a meta-activity. Lots of successful people are alcoholics and drug addicts partly because you can do it while working.
Try to get things done as fast as possible to make them feel more exciting
This can be difficult, but it’s a general thing to keep in mind. There’s a reason why movies are often so exciting, while life can feel dull. Events in movies happen much faster.
Forgive yourself for procrastination, and just wait it out
Procrastination will always happen, and I think it’s impossible to fix. So you might as well just accept it.
