The United States announced its Olympic women’s soccer roster Wednesday, and one of the biggest names in the sport’s history was not included.

Alex Morgan, among the most accomplished players in U.S. history, was the most notable exclusion from the 18-player roster assembled by coach Emma Hayes, who is in her first year leading the team and hoping to return it to its place atop the sport.

The U.S. was eliminated from last year’s World Cup earlier than expected, falling in the Round of 16. They followed that with a bronze medal finish at the Tokyo Games.

Morgan started each of the Americans’ four matches in the World Cup but did not score a goal, recording a single assist.

If this is the end of Morgan’s time with the national team, she’ll finish her career with two World Cup titles and gold and bronze medals from the Olympics.

“It’s disappointing to miss out on the opportunity to represent our country at the Olympics,” Morgan wrote in a statement on X. “That tournament will always hold a special place in my heart, and wearing our colors is always a source of great pride.”

“Being selected for an Olympic roster is a major accomplishment and honor, and it goes without saying that this was a highly competitive process for all the players, with many challenging decisions to make, particularly given the tremendous effort everyone has put in over the past 10 months,” Hayes said in a statement.

“There were numerous factors involved in selecting an 18-player roster along with alternates, but I’m excited about the group we’ve assembled.”

One of the most memorable goals in the history of U.S. Soccer belongs to Morgan, a header in the 123rd minute in the semifinals of the 2012 Olympics at Old Trafford to defeat Canada 4–3.

The win sent the U.S. to the gold medal game, where they beat Japan 2–1.

Morgan concluded her statement by promising to cheer on her former teammates.

“In less than a month, I’m looking forward to supporting this team and cheering them on from home alongside everyone else in our country,” she said.

The rest of the roster is as follows:

  • Goalkeepers Alyssa Naeher and Casey Murphy.
  • Defenders Tierna Davidson, Emily Fox, Naomi Girma, Casey Krueger, Jenna Nighswonger and Emily Sonnett.
  • Midfielders Korbin Albert, Sam Coffey, Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle and Catarina Macario.
  • Forwards Crystal Dunn, Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson.

The alternates are goalkeeper Jane Campbell, midfielders Hal Hershfelt and Croix Bethune and forward Lynn Williams.

The team will play two more exhibition matches before the Olympics begin: July 13 against Mexico in Harrison, New Jersey, and July 16 against Costa Rica in Washington, D.C.

The Americans’ first match is scheduled for July 25 against Zambia in Nice, France.

The U.S. has never gone three consecutive Olympics or World Cups without winning a gold medal, a streak Hayes’ team is hoping to avoid.
