To Be or Not to Be (Natural)

I remember deciding to wear my hair in its natural state. It was 2009, and my decision came from a frustrated place. I had only remembered relaxed hair, from the time that I was in elementary school.

I saw a couple of photos of girls who had beautiful natural hair, and I thought why not me? My hair was short and thin, and I had taken to sew-ins. I made a promise to myself that after my wedding in July 2009, I would never relax my hair again.

The journey was easy at first, because I hid my hair behind sew-ins and wigs, but when I decided to wear my own hair, I suddenly wasn’t so happy with my decision.

It was a struggle, and I felt so unattractive. BUT I stayed with it, and I am so glad that I did! I absolutely love my hair now. I started noticing other girls and women around me getting inspired to wear their hair natural too. They felt comfortable with themselves, when they hadn’t before.

I guess I said all of that to say, if you are bold enough to be your authentic self, you will live more freely and inspire others to do the same.

Embrace all of you exactly the way that you are. It’s totally worth it!
