Who understands the dictum ‘Change is the only constant’ better than FBI & NSA? FBI upgrades her organization-wide systems every 6xmonths and NSA sniffs Terabytes of data in fraction of a second. Information age we are in is transforming through change at a lightning speed, never seen before, making response from various spheres/echelons of ICT inevitable. Tabula Rasa is being re-written with the impressions from the tech ‘spheres’ (As I am calling them in this article) namely Wearables, Internet of Things and Big data. Proliferation of each sphere is impacting the other and one can find the connection between them through regression. Prolific diversification of wearables/gadgets giving rise to the tides of Big data due to IoT models will soon tip off to become unstable and out of control in the absence of a binding force. The next few paragraphs will glide through each ‘sphere’ underscoring the necessity of ether we call ‘Cellular Network’ the necessary binding force.

The Spheres in the age of Information & Communication.


From Google glass enabling AR/VR to Apple/Samsung watches (which are actually far from qualifying as a wrist watch though!) from exercise shoes, bands to solar clothes and what not have UX incomplete without ubiquitous connectivity and interconnection. Do you think that the new breed of products bent upon replacing your wallet and shifting them into wearables and smart phones enabled with NFC and relying on OTT e-commerce models like Paypal, AliPay by Ali express, ebay and Apple pay (new in the arena) can survive without robust synchronization, fool-proof security and fail-safe availability of access bearers? Non-wearable i-enabled appliances like TVs and fridges already communicating but on fixed networks in the last mile at least but still demand the ether, the connectivity based on reliable indices. For these wearables or i-wear I must say the UX acceptability to the UX or customer experience management is practically viable with carrier grade networks and the ether only.

IoT and Big data

Wearables, smart phones and i-devices exponential growth evolving into a culture of Internet of Things which is fueling the rise of Big data structured and un-structured alike. In the wake of this rising tide the service providers are struggling as the business and economic need is the application of data analytics to gauge the customer behaviour, usage pattern in order to manage the user experience and service. Imagine with 100% tele-density across planet, multiple devices per user running multiple application each will give rise to infinite number of connections, and we can call them communication channels and in order to provide sustainable business models, tap new revenue streams and sniff those infinite subscriber or user channels a binding force is required which is the ether here. In order to precisely relate a customer experience over each of these channels with available service requires assimilation of array of metrics for instance the channel quality, meta data accessed, paths traversed, delay, retainability, device information and application layer etc etc. The timely relay of this information in width and breadth of internet hemisphere is not possible without the infrastrcture we are calling ether and unravelled below.

Ether is the Cellular Networks

Credit goes to 3GPP/IMT for coming up with the mobile networks/cellular network technology models which have evolved over time rigorously and emerging into culmination of access technologies in the last mile and access agnostic core ready to assimilate, scale and control unprecedented data channels demand from Internet of Things. Globally adopted by the Telco operators giving them edge over OTTs and other providers. From carrier grade transport (not internet grade) to lamda switching (IP over glass) in the aggregation, the synchronization and enormity of data issues arising from IoT are addressable. One of the access technologies of cellular network namely LTE-Advance has the solution for all permutations of service demand using its QoS bearers (wide QCI range) while SDNs and HetNets have capability to service high number of users on-demand basis not only this telco operators are also using telecom grade WiFi for the CIPRI termination of Pico cells and also vendors coming with SON solutions for co-existence of LTE Pico cells and WiFi APs in stadiums and high street malls. Disruptive nature of wifi has been turned into opportunity by cellular network envision. The security and authorization paradigm has been resolved by the inherent centralized architecture of mobile cores. Cellular Networks silver bullet ‘5G’ is yet to come. 5G is not a technology in itself rather a culmination of multiple access layers obviously with new revenue streams from niche markets and evolved business model.
