“Can’t” no longer works in politics
Since we announced this campaign three weeks ago, the most common advice we’ve received from the “experts” has been about what we can’t say and what we can’t do.
We’ve been told that if we want to win in Florida, we can’t come out with strong support of Planned Parenthood and the right for women to make their own healthcare decisions. We’ve been told that we can’t talk about the time I fought back against the NRA and won. We’ve been told that we can’t talk about my work to ban fracking in Tallahassee, because we can’t fund our campaign without big checks from Big Oil.
Let me tell you a secret I learned a while back: “can’t” no longer works in politics.
We don’t have to run this campaign as “Republican Lite” to win, and we don’t need to give up on our values to fund this campaign either. We’re going to run on our Democratic principles and fuel our campaign with small dollar, online contributions from people who care about the future of Florida — people like you.
We’re going to win by going to every corner of the state — all 67 counties — over the next 18 months, and sharing our ideas on how we can build a better Florida together. We’re going to talk about the importance of Planned Parenthood, affordable access to healthcare, and a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions.
We’re gonna tell our story about being sued by the NRA — and we’re going to talk about more common sense gun reform. We’re going to stand up and fight back against fracking in Tallahassee and the Sabal Trail Pipeline because our water and our people are more important than lining Big Oil’s pockets.
We’re going to talk about better funding for public education, an end to high-stakes testing, and better pay for our teachers. We’re going to talk about work with dignity and the need for jobs in this state that pay a living wage. We’re going to talk about the issues that matter most to Floridians, and we’re going to have conversations with voters about their needs.
And best of all, we’re going to do all of this without having to worry about how it will impact our campaign funding, because we won’t be beholden to any special interests. We’re running a campaign of the people, by the people, and for the people, and if enough of us are willing to work together, this people-powered campaign will bring us to victory.
We can win together. And with your help, we will win together.
Bring it home,
