We in our office too started using slack as there were network restrictions on everything irrelevant to work or can say during coding. We used it as a source of water cooler talks with other team mates and also for the purpose of work cards that we integrated with trello, but frankly speaking, this had never replaced the emails and now, I personally feel distracted while using it during work. So there will be no gap if I stop using it.
