Oracle Sample Database in SQLite
This week, my prestigious teacher, Syed Shabih Naqvi, who teach us Data Mining at University of Haripur (UOH), showed us how to write simple database queries. He used an old version of Oracle for demonstration purposes and asked us to practice this at home because otherwise, this course won’t be any fun. The problem with that oracle version is that it’s difficult to set it up because of compatibility and configuration issues and in my opinion, it’s an overkill for just testing purposes. SQLite is a far better fit for this kind of situation. Of course, for a full-fledged performance-driven database system, Oracle, Postgresql and the likes are great, but for academic purposes and for testing, SQLite is the right option.
Many of my classmates were having some difficulties installing and configuring Oracle on their system, so I thought let’s port the sample database provided with Oracle for testing purposes to SQLite and use that instead. This is a guide for my friends, who I suspect didn’t even heard of SQLite before this, so that they could easily import the Database and start working on it.
1. Download SQLite Browser:
We’ll use SQLite Browser because it provides a nice graphical interface and is freely available for Windows. Go to http://sqlitebrowser.org/ and download the installer for your operating system. It’s not that big, just around 15 Mb or so. After the download is complete, install it accepting the defaults, no need for any custom configuration.
2. Download the db File:
After installing the SQLite Browser, go to this link, and download the file I’ve provided there. This is SQLite db file which contains the tables I’ve ported from Oracle e.g. emp, dept etc.
3. Load the db File in SQLite Browser:
Open the SQLite Browser and open the file that you downloaded above. Go to File > Open Database… Then navigate to the folder where you downloaded the .db file and open it.
That’s it, now the tables are loaded and you can play with them however you want.
4. Execute Queries:
To execute the queries, navigate to the Execute SQL tab and write your query in the textbox. To Run the query, click on the play button, it’ll show the results of the query under the textbox and whether it succeeded or not.
And that’s it, no need to install some big Database Management System like Oracle, just a few MBs of SQLite and you’re good to go.
