Indie Music is On The Rise
India has had a perennial influence of Bollywood and international music on us since time immemorial, thereby limiting our mind to specific genres such as the pop, rock, hip-pop, electronica etc.
It has been discerned that the music scene couldn’t grow in the previous days due to excessive aversion towards accepting local culture. There have been numerous artists who function out independently. They start out by doing it all by themselves. From productions to setting up their avenues and to distribution of their art; everything has been managed all by them. It isn’t very heartening to know how difficult it gets to derive recognition from the Indian music target audience.
The local artists hailing from all nooks, corners and walks of life have not particularly been able to gain momentum since everyone’s still more of a ‘disco diwane’. But despite the shortcomings such as not having much acceptance and places to share the common love for music as an art, or the chief influence of film’s music; the Indie music scene has tried growing significantly and have succeeded in doing so too!
To enumerate, artists now can and have a better access to live stages (small or big) and online realm such as the Youtube. This has not only garnered attention of already established musicians around the world but also selective audience. It may be a small portion only, but overall ears have grown enormously; enough to substantiate their existence in the Indian music circuit.
The society has come a long way. From head banging to multilingual folk music, artists like Parikrama and Raghu Dixit have exponentially grown in the market, concurrently augmenting the demand of more such local artists and bands in India. Album sales and subscriptions have improved as well. Earlier, it was difficult to reach out to the audience in terms of delivering music, or sharing album leads, but now with social media pages and Youtube, one can easily get started with this autonomously and reach out to a greater mass.
From early hiccups to little accomplishments, these local stars have been gaining love and attention; even more acceptance that there are adequate music institutes to disseminate this genre of music art; specially being taught by the artists themselves.
Beyond this, there are plenty music schools in India to learn the art of music per se. Be it percussion instruments that are locally or region-specifically generated.
The sense of music resonates with us all inducing good feelings; hence we must allow and create the same art with full liberty as much as we appreciate it.
