Understanding the advertising industry better

While most people dislike watching the unending TV commercials in-between their favourite TV show, there are others who derive great pleasure from such commercials. These people of course are those who dream of making it big in the advertising industry. Are you one of those people, and if yes, are you sure that this is the career that you wish to pursue? 1. Collective effort of many departments

A successful ad campaign, whether it’s on social media or on television, is a result of the combined efforts of many departments of an ad agency. Whether you work in the design team or are a copywriter, your efforts will have to be collaborated with those of other copywriters, graphic designers, creative directors, as well as those of people in the non-creatives areas like account executives, media directors, etc. You just cannot work in isolation in an advertising agency. Hence, if you are not a team player yet, work on that aspect to get better.

2. High pressure job

Enter the field knowing that you will have to work in a high-pressure environment irrespective of your profile. There will be timelines to meet, last minute changes, clients to answer to, as well as the fear of loss of job over a failed campaign. Not everybody can think and work creatively in such high-pressure environment. Before joining one of the advertising courses to learn more, think whether you are cut out for the industry.

3. The heart to take criticism in your stride

Praise and censure both are part and parcel of the field. There will be times when your work is highly appreciated, and other times when it will be criticised, despite your best efforts. It’s important to accept appreciation humbly and take criticism in your stride. Even when you are asked to rework a creative you thought was your best, it’s important to not get discouraged. The field is highly subjective and it may not always be your fault. You can’t let the negativity get the better of you.

4. Work culture

You have to keep in mind the work culture before you step in. You will get ample opportunities to party, yes. Unlike other typical corporates, the work culture is also more relaxed. However, you will have to put in long hours. The timings will be erratic and most of the times, you can’t shy away from working on the weekends.

There are naturally both positives and negatives about the industry. However, there are great growth opportunities and a great career scope. If you think you would love to work in advertising, go for it!
