Couldn't agree more. Just look at the space of Snap, and the containerized package models being spit out by the OS venders (Canonical, RedHat, etc…). This move to abstract packages away from being tied to a specific OS/package management system is HUGE, arguably a bigger impact than containers themselves. Perhaps I’m giving it more weight than I should, but it seems this is an area we should be paying more attention to as this impacts not just the container world, but also the configuration management world as it would allow greater unification in design of packages and config files. Orchestration of build would become stupid simple.
