OFFF15 CONFERENCE

FINALLY FUCKING FIFTEEN

BCN 26–27–28 May

On 26–27–28 of May OFFF took place in Barcelona, here you can find my thoughts about this conference, the speakers and the city, so if you wanna go the next year or if you are going to another conference with some of the people who had a speech here you are in the right place.

First of all watch this video about OFFF15

This article is covering all the aspects about OFFF so if you wanna skip to the part you are interested in just fell free to do that, this are the main stuff I will talk about:

PRICE — ORGANIZATION — SPEAKERS — VENUE — LEARNINGS

OFFF is a unique experience in the world of conferences for 4 reasons:

  1. It’s really cheap
  2. There are so many speakers that you can find for sure who you wanna listen to
  3. It’s in Barcelona
  4. Take place at the museum of design

PRICE

The ticket for OFFF is something really apart from all the other conferences you can attend to, you can pay from 120 to 200 euro for a 3 day conference. If you are usual to the conferences you already know but if this will be your first experience believe me, this is fucking cheap. Here you can buy the tickets for the next year.

ORGANIZATION

Root stage full for Stefan Seigmaster

On the other side, if you pay less you’ll have more people, at OFFF you can find more than 3000 people. This is not a big problem if you’ll keep in mind that you’ll have a huge queue for the coffe, huge queue for the bathroom, huge queue for the food, huge queue to take your wristband, huge queue for everything.

Despite all this queue the stage is pretty visible from all the point of view in the room and if you just arrive before the speech you are interested in will start you’ll have no problem to find a good central seat.

The biggest advice I can give you regarding the organization is to go to take your wristband the day before the conference will start. Usually from 4 to 8 pm the day before they open to exchange your ticket with your wristband, if you have the possibility to be there do it, the first day of OFFF the queue for the wristband will be more than huge, impossible.

VENUE

From left to right, BCN Market, Museum of Design and Torre Agbar

OFFF take place at the Museum of Design of Barcelona, this is a cool building just few meter after the Norman Foster’s Torre Agbar, it’s on the red line of the metro, GLORIES stop. The museum is a modern building and is the perfect place for a conference like OFFF, it’s really big, many rooms, big root stage, a nice outside for food trucks and if you are there you can also take a look at the museum collection.

SPEAKERS

Ok, the speakers are more than 40 so I’m not going to describe all of them, if you wanna have a quick description of everyone just go to the website of OFFF or download the app of OFFF15.

Here I’m going to just talk to you about the one that I still remember, this means that they are the one that said something important to me or that their way to have a speech is something you can’t miss.

In general you can split all the speakers in 3 categories:

  1. The ones that just give you an overview of the works they did (you should skip a speaker like this, just go to his/her website and you’ll have the same experience).
  2. The ones that give you an overview of the works they did but that also going deep in every works explaining you how they get to this result and why.
  3. There are some speakers that will use the hour that they have to give you a lesson about something they learned in their career. This is something you can’t find surfing the web, this kind of speech are the one I prefer.
  4. The one that made something for OFFF, you can’t absolutely miss a talk like this, usually is really nice and you need it to deeply understand the stuff they did for OFFF

ANTON AND IRENE type N 3

Anton and Irene is a design studio based in New York by Anton and irene. They worked many years for Fantasy Interactive and when they realised that they were not doing anymore the designers but they were a sort of designer manager they decided to quit their job and open the studio.

Irene on stage

The speech was very funny and engaging, they talked about what they learned in their first year of self-employment at the studio. During the speech they talked about the project for Wacom and for Karim rashid.

ATELIER type N 4

Atelier is a design school based in Bcn and the guys attending the last year designed all the open titles for the OFFF15. The guys choose a name for their group, MASMACHOS. This speech was really cool, they basically explained everything about the open title, how they get to the FINALLY FUCKING FIFTEEN and how they managed all, the printed stuff, the digital, the video. All the process behind every choice.

VALLEE DUHAMEL type N 3

VALLEE DUHAMEL is a studio based in Montreal, what they do is really cool and complicated, they are a Lo-fi design studio so they just do with their hand everything you can find in their video, of course there’s postproduction but it’s really a few, they don’t use AE to create something, they just make it. The speech was about 15 things that they understood are like pattern in their work, darkhole, cats….. Just keep in mind that VALLEE is the craziest person on the stage of all the OFFF so you can’t really miss it.

This is how they do stuff, have fun.

VASAVA type N 4

VASAVA is a design studio based in BCN, they do a lot of cool stuff of course but this year OFFF asked them to create the wonderful book that every people got at the conference. The presentation was really surreal, basically they based all the book on the concept that OFFF is a secret ancient religion and that they have to discover how works this cult. So in the book we can find the God, the constellation, the bestiary. Just to let you understand on the stage there was also this Indian man that talked in Urdu about his anthropology studies about OFFF.

This is the book from VASAVA, here the behance project.

AKQA type N 2/3

Ok everybody knows about this worldwide agency and they also didn’t the unforgettable speech because most of it was just showcase but some concepts he explained were really cool and of course their work is so amazing and without budget that they deserve 1 hour of your time.

ROBERT HODGIN type N 2

Robert really like what he does, really. He spoke 1 hour and half about virtual fish and birds and how they act in a virtual environment and you can trust me nobody left the room and nobody got bored. He is the type of person that can inspire you in a really true way just with virtual fish. Oh sometimes you can see some historical picture of Lincoln, Churchill and so on with some baby photoshopped in. Great

GAVIN STRANGE aka JAM FACTORY type N 3

Gavin works for aardman for the one who doesn’t know what this studio is, they are the creator of Wallace and Gromit. Gavin is really passions about his work and like a superhero during the night he design with the name of jam factory. You’ll see a lot of stuff he does and he’ll inspire you with his freshness and joy. Fyi next year he’ll be in charge of the open title of OFFF16.

SIGNALNOISE and ONESIZE type N 4

James white is the guy behind SIGNALNOISE, and if you like the ’80 you’ll love him. This 2 studios designed the closing title for OFFF15, unlike other years this time they tried to do something really different, they managed to give you in your hands the closing title. As you can see they designed a card game with all the name of people and studio that had a talk this year. During all the time at OFFF you could watch a ’80 style adv that showed the game. As main closing video you can find a great video with the old guy of the ’80 adv, no spoiler here so just press play below.

STEFAN SAGMEISTER type N 3

If you wanna listen to a lesson about something, Sagmeister is the right person for this. He’s a worldwide famous graphic designer and founder of his studio in ny.

Stefan made a speech about BEAUTY, yes about this simple but at the same time complex concept, starting from the first decades of 19th century until today. His idea is that after the second world war the concept of beauty became flat and wthout new ideas. Of course you can agree or disagree with him but you absolutely have to watch a speech like this one. During the 3 days conference this is the only speaker that created a bug in the organization, there were more that 3000 person attending this speech and many people couldn’t enter in the main stage room.

LEARNINGS

  1. Outside is full of places you’d like to work with. Even if you work for the coolest company (and I do that) there are a lot of other cool studio and agency you’d like to work for, so just search for them.
  2. There isn’t a clear path in our field. If you are the kind of person that spend his night asking himself if in 10/15 year will be still designing webpage or other stuffs, don’t worry, everyone has a different and non linear path. So just do what you love.
  3. Everyone have the same problem. Even anton&irene needs to send an email to the client (USA today) to stop them from having inconsistent feedback (do it bigger, do it colored, do it purple)
  4. There’s not a single truth. Don’t trust nobody that tells you “this is how should be”. There’s not a single way to do that and a single vision about one project.
