The Beginning of the Romantic Era
The story begins in the Umayyad era of the 7th century, where a young man named Qays ibn al-Mullawah and a beautiful young girl named Laila lived. Born in the rich family, Laila was no less than a princess who was expected to be married in a wealthy family. While Qays was a poet and belonged to the same tribe as Laila. But, Qays financial situation was not like Laila, but when it comes to love, there is no rules. Both fell in love with each other and began their evergreen journey. Qays being a poet used to composed poems and dedicated them to Laila, the love of his life. The poem indicated his love for Laila.
But soon the news of their affair caught the eyes of Qay’s friends. Just like any friends would do, they started teasing and made fun of his love to Laila. But Qays was on the seventh cloud, hence the taunts never really bothered him.
Laila Majnu being a love drama, took a twist when Qays thoughts started toying with the idea of marrying Laila. One day, after gathering all the courage and motivation, Qays decided to meet Laila’s parents and possess about his feelings towards Laila.
Poor lad, never really thought about the consequences! Laila’s father refused to take Qays his lawful son-in-law due to his low status in the community. While stating, that it would be a crime for Laila if she marries below status guy like him according to the Arab traditions.
But destiny had planned something else for them! Laila’s parents married her off to a wealthy man. Qays was heartbroken when he heard the news of Laila’s marriage. He wandered around the desert leaving all that he had in the village, his family, his friends. Eventually, his spouse gave up hopes on his return. Day after day, Qays strength started pining. But he continued reciting love poetry for his beloved and sometimes writing Laila’s name on the sand with his bear hands or a stick.
Laila, even though she was living in a big mansion, her soul, body, and mind was shattered. She thought about Qays all day. Soon, she and her husband flew to Iraq where Laila’s health started to deteriorate and became the cause of her death. Hearing the news, Qays’ friends went looking for Qays all over the wilderness. But, couldn’t find their dear friend.
Not long afterwards, Qays’ body was found on a rock near Laila’s grave where he had written three versed ascribed to him. His love towards Laila was unconditional and incomparable. This gave him the name of “Majnu” or “Majnun Layla” which indicates “Starstruck or crazy in love by Layla”
