This is What Happens When a Woman Supports Bernie Sanders Online

My perspective is that Emily had some followers who were fantasizing about her. They had unrealistic expectations of her (as they probably do about all women; they’re sexist pigs) and didn’t want to be challenged by her. Some of the other posts, by Hillary supporters and others, put her down because they just generally don’t want to feel wrong about their views and can’t imagine someone having a different view (and feel they have to denigrate someone rather than form a logical argument). I’m glad that I don’t have so much scrutiny, especially by the rest of those who sound like horrible people. Personally, I think that Hillary has a much better understanding of foreign relations with regard to Syria and our military intervention in the Middle East. Thank you for showing a person who has the courage to stand up for something she believes in, despite the negativity that she has to deal with as a consequence. I don’t think that regulating comments (“harassing” or otherwise) is a good idea. My hope is that my children, and others growing up with social media as a pervasive force in their lives, learn to be as “real” and genuine online as they are in their other interactions with people; my sense is that a lot of those comments would never be made if the person was face to face with another human being. Maybe in the future there will be fewer thoughtless, mean, and denigrating comments online and there will be more discourse, reflection, and progress. (That’s kind of the difference between FB and Medium.)
