According to Lifewire, a meme is defined as a piece of cultural symbolism or idea that spreads from person to person. On the Internet, this is adopted often as to ridicule human personality and behaviours. Memes can often spread in the form of pictures or videos, and can range from being simple in nature to complex philosophical content.

The Futurama Fry Meme — What Exactly Is it?

The “Futurama Fry” meme shows a picture of one of the main characters of the sci-fi cartoon “Futurama” squinting his eyes, and has words overlaid on the top and bottom of the picture. The pattern of the meme is usually in the context of the words “Not sure if (x), or just (y)”, show the internal struggle of thoughts Fry is debating in his mind.

Origins

This meme first appeared from season 2, episode 6 of Futurama called “The Lesser of Two Evils” released on February 20, 2000 where Fry enters Leela’s room and discovers her bedroom underwear drawers halfway into the episode.

This meme first started as a screen capture comprising of two frames, deriving from a different meme called “I see what you did there”.

Knowyourmeme mentions that in terms of the search query results related to the “Futurama Fry” meme, it was too big to be quantified properly. However, several search terms relating to the meme with the keywords “fry meme” “futurama meme” showed a more accurate picture of how vast the reach was. Noticably, the words “Not sure if trolling, or just stupid” is also shown to increase in popularity a few months after the meme surfaced.
