Edmund’s Martyrdom

King Edmund, against whom Ivar advanced, stood inside his hall, and mindful of the Saviour, threw out his weapons. The hall, normally a place of counsel and fellowship, was now filled with an air of tense anticipation. Edmund, ever faithful and resolute, had chosen to face his destiny without resorting to violence. His decision was not born of cowardice, but of a profound commitment to his Christian principles.

As Ivar the Boneless and his formidable Viking army closed in, Edmund’s courtiers and warriors urged him to take up arms, to lead them in a desperate defense. But Edmund, with a calm and steady voice, addressed them, saying, “Our Lord taught us to love our enemies and to turn the other cheek. I will not stain my soul with bloodshed, even in the face of death.”

His words, imbued with an unshakable faith, stirred mixed emotions among his followers. Some were moved by his piety and strength of character, while others, gripped by fear and anger, struggled to accept his decision. Nonetheless, they remained loyal, knowing that Edmund’s unwavering faith had always guided them true.
