About PCOS

PCOS is an acronym for polycystic ovary syndrome. This medical condition influences women’s hormonal levels. Women with PCOS start producing more than normal quantity of male hormones, which causes menstrual disorders in them and sometimes they also skip their periods. Getting pregnant becomes difficult for them, which further causes infertility issues.

PCOS may also contribute to other issues such as the production of hair on the body and face or hair fall, or heart diseases and diabetes. Diabetes drug and birth control pills are said to help restore the hormonal imbalance.

PCOS influences a female’s ovaries, and other reproductive organs that regulate progesterone and estrogen; these hormones regulate women’s menstrual cycle. A group of hormones called androgens is also released by the ovaries. These hormones play an important role in male traits and their reproductive activity.

Ovulation and the ovaries are affected by PCOS. Its main features are:

• An increase in male hormones

• Irregularity in periods

• Cysts in ovaries

In PCOS, cysts develop in the ovaries. But it is not like every woman who has PCOS will develop cysts in her ovaries, but she will have hormonal imbalance and difficulty in getting pregnant.

The cysts inside the ovaries obstruct the egg maturation process. This ovulation obstruction alters levels of progesterone, estrogen, LH, and FSH. Progression and estrogen levels subside; whereas, androgen levels rise.

Excessive male hormones obstruct the menstrual cycle. Therefore, women with PCOS often skin their periods. It is said that Antonio Vallisneri, an Italian physician, first mentioned its symptoms in 1721. So, PCOS can be an old condition.

What Are Its Causes?

Doctors are not sure about its causes. But yes, they feel it happens because of the increased levels of male hormones. Factors that may contribute to excessive androgen levels are insulin resistant, inflammation and genes.

Insulin resistance: Up to 70 percent of women with PCOS are also diagnosed with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is when the cells in the body fat, liver and muscles ignore or resist the signal sent by insulin.

Inflammation: An increased level of inflammation is often found in women with PCOS. The reason for increased inflammation could also be overweight.

Genes: Some studies conclude that PCOS can also be genetic, which genes can also be responsible for this problem.

What Are Its Symptoms?

A few women get to know during their first period that there is something wrong. Others sense that there is some problem when they gain much weight or struggle getting pregnant. Some systems are:

Extra bleeding: some women may have extra bleeding because the periods may have longer intervals between them. This causes a thick lining buildup in the uterine.

Irregular periods: As ovulation is slowed down or obstructed, this prevents the uterus from shedding every month. Therefore, irregular periods occur.

Hair growth: As the levels of male hormones increase, women start growing hair on their faces and the other parts of their bodies.

Weight gain: Up to 80 percent of women gain extra weight or become obese.

Headaches: Hormonal imbalance may cause headaches in some women.

How Does PCOS Influence The Body?

PCOS can affect the body in several ways, such as:

Metabolism: PCOS may affect your metabolism. And therefore, several women with PCOS gain extra weight.

Fertility: PCOS can affect fertility levels because those women do not ovulate on a regular basis. This causes infertility issues.

Sleep: Hormonal imbalance may affect your sleep. Women with PCOS might develop sleep disorders.

Stress or depression: When we are happy, we have one kind of chemistry. When we are sad, we have another kind. So, hormonal disturbances may cause mood-swings, stress or depression.

Complications in pregnancy: PCOS obstructs the menstrual cycle so it becomes difficult for women to get pregnant. Women with PCOS are also on the risk of premature delivery, high blood pressure, and miscarriage.

Medical Treatment

Birth control pills: Taking progestin and estrogen daily may help regulate ovulation, prevents excess hair growth and restore hormonal balance.

Clomiphene: It is a fertility drug, which can be helpful for women with PCOS. However, it might cause risks such as twins or multiple births.

Metformin: This drug is used to cure type 2 diabetes. As it improves insulin levels, it can also help treat PCOS.

Surgery: When other treatments fail, the doctor may suggest surgery for PCOS.
