Historical Places in Makkah
The religious city of Makkah is the motherland of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the city is only open to Muslims who mostly go to perform Hajj or Umrah. Yet, there are many places you can visit in the greater district of Makkah. We have recommended a few places you can examine during your Umrah or Hajj. These places have added to the cultural, historical, and religious understanding of the city and to Islam as well.
- Masjid Al Haram The Grand Mosque
The marvelous Masjid in the history of Islam is placed in the center of Makkah city. In the heart of al-Masjid al-Haram, the Ka’abh fascinatingly stands on a place which all the Muslims face in their daily prayers all over the world. The first Masjid to be constructed on the globe is al-Masjid al-Haram. This is the largest masjid in the world that can hold millions of pilgrims. This religious masjid houses the holy well of Zamzam.
2. Masjid Aisha
Masjid Aisha, also known as Taneem Mosque (Masjid e Taneem), is popular heaven for pilgrims, exclusively locals who are starting their Hajj or Umrah tour. This is where Aisha (SAW), the dearest wife of Mohamed (PBUH), prepared to enter Ihram.
3. Masjid Nimra
The Masjid Nimrah is located on the plain of Arafat. When the Prophet (ﷺ) was at Arafat on his farewell Hajj on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah 10 AH (632 CE) he camped here. After lunchtime, he delivered his famous sermon (reproduced below) at Waadi Urana nearby while placed on his camel, after which he attends the salah. More than 100,000 Sahabah attended him on this Hajj.
4. JABAL NOOR
The mountain of light contains the Cave of Hira near its summit. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) spent ample time here meditating and received the first revelation at this cave. Cave of Hira is almost 4 Km away from Kabba and is almost at the height of 634 meters in the Jabal Noor. It is one of the most demanded Ziyarat places in Makkah.
5. JABAL RAHMA — ARAFAT
The above picture shows Jabal-ur-Rehmah (Mountain of Mercy) on the plain of Arafat. Standing at Arafat is the fundamental requirement of Hajj and pilgrims come here on the 9th Dhul Hijjah (second day of Hajj).
