Excellent analysis, Ms. Hatfield — hadn’t the Liberty take a similar hit on the attendance front when they’d played in New Jersey recently?
I think N. Cloud is on the right track — 8,000 fans in a smaller venue creates a better fan experience than a half-filled NBA arena.
I believe, however, that the league’s financial independence will be determined more by accessing new revenue streams than by gate receipts — and perhaps the fact that more players like EDD and Diggins are choosing not to play overseas can open doors in that area (maybe even something like this summer’s Big3?) during the August to April lull.
