The truth about the inevitable rise of the Right
The truth is that this rise is not inevitable at all. It is a consequence of too many people taking too many things for granted, such as equal rights for most people, decent work conditions for most people and even health care for most people.
When those rights were denied to some people, most people didn’t say a word. Now that it’s they who could be next, they still won’t say anything.
It’s still easier to blame some people for overburdening the system. And, instead of having a good, hard think about why the system is not working, for quite a number of people it’s easier to blame immigrants for all the system’s failings, whatever the truth. Or women’s rights, equal rights, gay rights etc., etc., etc.
That the right could profit from this lies at the centre/liberal/left’s door, insofar as they didn’t put up a credible answer to many people’s question: Where have all the decent jobs gone? Why will I almost certainly always be poorer than my parents’ generation (unless I’m the child of independently wealthy parents, of course)?
The correct answer would have been: The right and centre-right sold you out, and we connived at this. Going forward we shall do our best to correct this. And we’ll try to make jobs and education available to as many as possible, although the old manufacturing and mining jobs will never return. Those went away as much due to automation as anything else.
The answer given was: It didn’t happen, don’t know what you’re talking about; anyway, it’s your own fault, we didn’t force you to vote Republican/Tory/Ukip. You’ve only got yourselves to blame. [Which has some truth to it, but isn’t widely appreciated as a constructive comment.]
While occupying the moral high ground is very satisfying, speaking from experience, it rarely gets anything done, speaking from experience again. The only way that actually works is working for a better tomorrow today (I know that’s a hackneyed phrase, but it’s still true).
So, find out what’s going on, what’s possible and what’s attainable out there, in the great wide open that is society and life in general. And then get organised and do something about it.
Not for some people.
Not for most people.
But for all people.
Thank you for reading and a heart is always appreciated ☺
