I recall serving in the Navy at a time when black people were treated the same as white, but the idea of women serving alongside men upon naval vessels at sea was “Crazy Talk!” Ditto for gay/lesbian/bisexual people. I doubt most even knew what “transgender” meant.

Transgender people are the latest in their bid for serving their country with equality. What so many don’t realize is that not all trans people WANT to have gender reassignment surgery. And for those that feel that need, therein is the real question of cost and return.

While not a huge expense in the military medical budget, there is a service and staffing liability during the recovery and it is a cost, nonetheless. One might think that adding an extra year or two of service to the enlistment might be an equitable solution.
