Refill Please….3 Ways to Push Reset on Monday Morning

It’s here again. Monday. You knew it was coming. In case you weren’t aware, the days of the week never change. Getting up at 6:00am takes a lot of effort. You have to convince yourself you need 5 more minutes in the warmth of that overpriced comforter. We all do it, trust me. You lay there thinking “Do I really need a job to survive…?” Yes you do. Bummer right?

Personally, I am not a morning person, lucky for me, I have a very fat cat that demands my attention before my alarm even goes off. If you’re wondering, (You’re probably not) the answer is YES, he is on a diet. He lays ontop of me, meows obnoxiously and nudges my hand with his wet, cold nose. Who need’s an iPhone when you have a cat who needs just as much attention as you?

They say you know yourself better than anyone and in this case, it’s totally true. I know for a fact that if I do not set 5 alarms, I will not get up. I also know that if I don’t have a cup of coffee by 10am, I will turn into a grouchy old man…..Or is it a snickers bar? I never remember. Either way, it’s not a good thing. I needed a solid routine that was simple enough to do everyday, but also productive. After 3 months of pushing myself to get up, a routine started to form and it became much easier to emerge from my hibernation. How is that even possible, you may ask? Easy.

I usually start my morning at 5:00am. I stretch and go on a run until about 6:00am….however….I have been slacking lately. Cheeseburgers have been getting the best of me. #noshame I get ready for my day, make my bed, make sure the cat is attended to and am out the door by 7:15am. I snag a bar stool at my favorite diner, enjoy my cup of coffee and slide right into work mode. 6 refills later…I have accomplished nothing. Just kidding, I’m wired. On the plus side, my Monday morning has gone smoothly and I know today will be great because I feel awake, refreshed and excited for the upcoming week.

I’ll stop rambling now. The point is, pushing reset on Monday is not that hard to do if you follow these simple suggestions.

1. Accomplish One Task

Make your bed, clean your room, fold the laundry; it doesn’t matter. Whatever you do is a small goal that you have set for yourself, so when you come home after a long and exhausting day, you’ll be reminded that you already folded the laundry and you might feel a little better knowing you accomplished something today. It’s the small things that count the most.

2. Stay Focused on the Routine

It’s quite difficult to do, especially if you have a short attention span. Studies have shown that people who live with Bipolar Disorder, BPD and even ADHD do better when they have a daily routine. It is used to keep them focused and to create a sense of stability in their everday life. Your mental health is important, and without structure, your mind is more focused on your emotions. This often leads to another mental issue called Maladaptive Thinking.

3. Get a Full Night of Good Sleep

GO TO BED. Put down the phone, turn off the television and stop replaying the day in your mind. Sleep Deprivation plays a crucial role in our mental health. College students are the most effected by Sleep Deprivation. In fact, a study done at Brown University showed that 73% of students reported sleep problems, while only 11% reported good sleep. Sleep Deprivation causes you to have a lack of focus, making it difficult to learn anything or accomplish your goals with confidence.

So, In Conclusion…(I’ve always wanted to say that)

Everyday is a new opportunity for you to make a difference in the world. With these 3 tips, I guarantee you won’t be mad when the barista at Starbucks spells you name wrong.

“Uhh, EXCUSE ME, My name is Abby with a Y”

Now, unwrap your blanket burrito, look in the mirror (ignore your bed head) and tell yourself that today will be awesome because YOU are awesome.
