Ask Obama to pardon Chelsea Manning

The following is a short letter I’ve written to President Obama asking that he pardon Chelsea Manning. I urge you to follow suit and ask for a pardon for Chelsea. She is now at risk of being detained in solitary indefinitely due to a recent suicide attempt.

You can write to Obama through the White House website or by sending mail to:

Dear President Obama,

I write to you today to thank you for your recent pardoning of hundreds of people who committed nonviolent offenses, and to beg for the pardon of one more individual: Chelsea Manning.

Chelsea is a prisoner of conscience. She acted on impulse in order to right what she felt was wrongdoing by the US military. The material she leaked did not apparently harm anyone. She deserves fair and kind treatment. Instead she has been imprisoned in a facility where she is not being treated appropriately as a woman. She has been jailed for her offenses for over 6 years.

Chelsea was recently hospitalized for attempting to commit suicide. As a result of charges related to the suicide attempt, made in desperation because of the treatment she has received while in a men’s military prison, she now possibly faces indefinite solitary detention. She has previously been placed in solitary and denied medical treatment related to her gender identity. Indefinite solitary confinement would be torture. Her situation is egregious and unacceptable in a civil society.

It is time now to let her go, for the time she has served. Consider that she will not be a repeat offender due to her fame and inability to obtain clearance in the future. She is a good person who deserves a second chance at having a normal, happy life. This is an opportunity to do something amazing and unexpected in your last few months as President. Please extend your mercy to Chelsea and grant her a pardon before you leave office.

Yours,

Heather Akers-Healy
