1 - SAMSUNG GALAXY S8

SAMSUNG GALAXY S8

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 / S8 Plus is the best phone for most people. It’s available across all four US carriers and unlocked. It has the best display on any smartphone right now, a head-turning, premium design, a top-of-the-line camera, reliable battery life, and fast performance. Thanks to Samsung’s popularity and the support of all four carriers, the S8 also has plenty of accessories, from cases to battery packs to wireless chargers, available to it.

The S8 comes in two flavors: the standard model and the larger S8 Plus. Deciding between the two basically comes down to whether you want a larger 6.2-inch screen or a more manageable-in-one-hand 5.8-inch display. Everything else (except for price, the Plus model is about $100 more) is the same between the two models.

The mostly glass design of the S8 might concern you about durability, but in the couple of months that we’ve been regularly using the phone, it hasn’t been much of an issue. The S8 also has IP68 water resistance, so you don’t need to worry about dropping it in a puddle or getting it wet at the beach.

Not everything is perfect with the S8 — the placement of the fingerprint scanner is its biggest flaw — but it gets enough right that we’re confident recommending it to everyone.

2 - APPLE IPHONE 7 / 7 PLUS

APPLE IPHONE 7 / 7 PLUS

If you’re not into the S8’s curvy design or are locked into Apple’s ecosystem, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are the best options for you. Both models have great build quality, sharp, color-accurate screens, fast performance, and easy-to-use software. The larger 7 Plus not only gives you a bigger screen, but it also offers a dual-camera system that allows for unique photographic tricks.

If you are in desperate need of a new phone right now, the iPhone 7 is an good choice, but if you’re able to wait a few months, Apple is expected to release a new model this fall with a new design and larger display. We’d wait if that’s an option for you.

3 - HTC U11

HTC U11

The U11 is one of the first smartphones available with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor, which claims to be both faster and more efficient for longer battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 also uses the 835 in the US, but not in Europe.

HTC’s recent smartphones have run very well optimised software and the U11 is no exception. It consistently flies along at a pace only Google’s Pixel devices have in recent memory. App launches, jumping between apps, camera launches, game loads, searches and phone unlocks using the fingerprint scanner are instant and do not get bogged down as you use the device.

Battery life was solid if not spectacular. The U11 lasted around 24 hours between charges without activating any power saving modes. That was while using it as my primary device, browsing and using apps for four hours with hundreds of push emails, 60 minutes of gaming, and listening to around five hours of music via Bluetooth headphones. Standby time was slightly disappointing, however, dropping just over 1% an hour while sitting dormant overnight with do not disturb activated.

The U11 is also fast to charge using Quick Charge 3.0 and a compatible charger, hitting 100% in just over an hour.

4 - LG G6

LG G6

After LG went wild with the G5, this year’s flagship G6 can’t help but seem a little subdued by comparison. That’s alright, though: It’s full of notable improvements, from the water-resistant body to the beautiful, extra-long screen. Plus, the dual-camera setup feels a lot more polished. And, despite packing one of last year’s Snapdragon 821 chipsets, the G6 plenty fast for most. There are some shortcomings though, like mildly concerning battery life and an interface that’ll still feel too heavy for some. Still, the G6 is easily the best smartphone LG has put together in a long time.

5 - OnePlus 5

OnePlus 5

Before we go any further, a few notes: We’re reviewing the top-of-the-line OnePlus 5, with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (available only in black). This model will set you back $540, but that’s still highly reasonable for the specs you get. Fortunately, there’s also a version with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (available only in gray) — that’ll set you back $480, and should still give every other flagship a run for its money.

Both versions of the phone are identical otherwise, from the Snapdragon 835 chipsets they share to their sealed, 3,300mAh batteries. (Yes, that’s just a hair smaller than the battery we got in the 3T.) For better or worse, though, OnePlus still prefers giving its phones two nanoSIM slots instead of a spot for a SIM and a microSD card. While this flexibility (and support for loads of GSM and LTE bands) make OnePlus 5 an excellent travel device, you’re better off getting the more expensive mode if you can afford it.
